What Is Insomnia?

Insomnia Disorder

Insomnia is the common global health problem which is popular as sleep disorder. You may still feel tired when you wake up. Insomnia can harm not only your energy levels and mood, but also your health, work performance and quality of life. With insomnia, you may have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting good quality sleep. This happens even if you have time and the right environment to sleep well.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that can be diagnosed with the help of a sleep study. The main symptoms are difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early and not being able to fall back asleep.

People with insomnia can't fall asleep, stay asleep, or get enough restful sleep. Insomnia can interfere with your daily activities and make you feel sleepy during the day. Lack of sleep over time leads to health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and weight gain.

One of the most common causes of insomnia is stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety can cause physical changes in the body that disrupt your ability to fall asleep such as increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and muscle tension. The other common causes of insomnia are depression, pain, medications (including over-the-counter), caffeine intake before bedtime, alcohol use before bedtime, and shift work schedules. It can also be caused by a change in routine such as traveling across time zones.

Insomnia may be the primary problem, or it may be associated with other medical conditions. Most adults need seven to eight hours a night. At some point, many adults experience short-term insomnia, which lasts for days or weeks. This is usually the result of stress or a traumatic event. But some people have long-term insomnia that lasts for a month or more.

In order to effectively treat insomnia there are several steps that can be taken: sleep hygiene practices (such as keeping a consistent sleep schedule), avoiding caffeine after 2 pm, exercising regularly (at least 20 minutes per day), using relaxation techniques before bedtime (such as deep breathing), managing stressors in one's life, and consulting with one's physician about any medical issues that may be causing the insomnia.

Insomnia can affect your memory and concentration. Short-term insomnia can be caused by stress or a change in your schedule or environment. This may last for a few days or weeks. Chronic insomnia occurs 3 or more nights a week, lasts more than 3 months, and cannot be fully explained by another health problem. Chronic insomnia increases your risk of high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
