Anxiety is similar to other forms of mental illness. It does not come
from personal weakness or upbringing problems. But researchers don't know
exactly what causes anxiety as it becomes one of the most common global health problem. Anxiety can be caused by a mental state, a physical state, the effects
of drugs, stressful life events, or a combination of these. The most common
causes of anxiety are:
Health issues:
Diseases such as thyroid problems, asthma, diabetes or heart disease can
also cause problems. People with depression may also develop symptoms of anxiety disorders. For example, a person who suffers from chronic depression
may begin to perform poorly at work. This can then lead to work-related stress
that can lead to anxiety.
Family history:
People with a family history of mental health problems are more likely
to experience anxiety. For example, OCD can be passed down in families.
Environmental factors:
Exposure to trauma can lead to an anxiety disorder, especially in
someone who is genetically predisposed to developing it.
Stressful events:
Stress at work, the loss of a loved one, or troubled relationships can
also trigger anxiety symptoms.
Heredity:
Anxiety disorders run in families. You can inherit them from one or both
parents, like eye color.
Personality factors:
Sometimes, people with
certain personality traits like perfectionists or those who like to be in
control, develop anxiety related problems.
Chemical imbalances:
Acute or chronic stress can alter the
chemical balance that controls your mood. Experiencing too much stress for a
long period of time can lead to anxiety disorders.
