Erectile dysfunction (ED) occurs when a man
has persistent trouble getting hard enough, long enough, to have sex. An
erection is made up of a complex chain of events, each reaction necessary for a
healthy organ. Although it is very common, it is not always easy to diagnose as
it can be a symptom of underlying physical and psychological health conditions.
Erectile
dysfunction is the major global health problem that affects 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men to varying
degrees and is of many types.
Erectile dysfunction (ED), or impotence, is the inability to develop or maintain an erection during sexual activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Inability to maintain an erection can be caused by emotional and physical factors. The emotional factor can be linked to stress issues from work, family problems or personal struggles such as depression. A physical factor that can cause ED is more likely because it often has an obvious cause. Taking one of several psychiatric medications can contribute emotionally and physically to erectile dysfunction. There are also less possible causes of this type of ED, such as neurological problems, possibly diabetes, multiple sclerosis, etc.
Erectile dysfunction may be a problem. In this, the penis does not function fully to provide sexual intercourse due to various problems. Erectile dysfunction is not something you have to endure. There are many misconceptions about erectile dysfunction and that it is a natural part of the aging process.
There are many misconceptions about erectile dysfunction that make people feel ashamed or embarrassed to tell their family and friends about their condition. The truth is that every man - especially over the age of 50 - will experience erectile dysfunction at some point in his life if he doesn't have a serious medical condition or problems with other vital organs.
Erectile Dysfunction is a sexual health problem seen by both male and female. Some
of the different types of erectile dysfunction are as follows:
Organic Erectile Dysfunction
Organic ED involves abnormalities of the penile arteries, veins, or both and is the most common cause of ED, especially in older men. Many experts believe that overgrowth of smooth muscle tissue in the penis, partial or complete loss of tissue, and fibrosis contribute to erectile dysfunction. Controllable risk factors for arteriosclerosis—being overweight, lack of exercise, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Sexual Desire Disorder
The disorder may have always been present or
may develop after a period of normal sexual function. Lack of desire can apply
in general or towards a current partner. Low levels of the female hormone
estrogen and the male hormone testosterone can lead to decreased sex drive. Precipitating
factors include aging, pregnancy, depression, anxiety and the use of certain
medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
Orgasm Disorders
People with orgasm disorder are unable to achieve orgasm or feel that orgasm is often delayed. These disorders can also occur as a result of physical factors, illness or the use of certain medications. Some factors that cause premature ejaculation can be psychological, such as performance anxiety during intercourse, stress or depression, disagreements, conflicts or communication barriers between partners.
Psychological Issues
occurs when an individual starts to associate erection failure with a particular emotion like shame or stress. It is well established that stress, depression and anxiety can interfere with a man's ability to achieve and maintain an erection. Even antidepressant medications can cause ED. Stress starts in the mind. Sexual stimulation activates nerve cells in the brain, which informs the body how to respond. There is strong evidence to show that you are more likely to develop ED if you have symptoms of depression and that more severe depression is associated with more severe ED.
One type of ED is referred to as “always hard” or "constant erection" which means that an erection always persists throughout the body no matter what the activity with no ability to ebb and flow.
